SPELLING ACTIVITIES

Here are some spelling activities you can do at home.

  1. Rainbow words - Write your spelling words then trace the words over using different colors.
  2. Consonant/Vowel Colors - Use two different colored pencils, crayons or markers. Write your spelling words and make the consonants one color and the vowels another color.
  3. Parts of Speech Spelling - Create a Venn Diagram. One side write all the noun spelling words and the other side write all the verb spelling words. Words that can be both a noun and a verb are written in the center. You can do this activity using nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, predicates...
  4. Flash Cards - Make a set of flashcards for studying your words.
  5. Spelling times 3 - Write each spelling word three times.
  6. Fraction Spelling - Write your spelling words out. Create a fraction for each word using the total number of letters in the word as the denominator and the total number of vowels as the numerator (i.e., fourth = 2/6)
  7. Vocabulary Sort - Sort your spelling words. Here are some examples of sorts you can do: vowel sounds, vowel numbers, syllable, parts of speech, categorize, root/base words, rhyme, alphabetical by third letter
  8. Sentences - Use each spelling word in a sentence. Spelling and grammar count.
  9. Spelling Concentration (2+ players) - Write each of your spelling words on two cards. Mix up the cards and lay them down so you can not see the words. Flip two cards. If you get a match you keep the cards. Take turns finding the matching spelling words.
  10. Word Stack - Write the first letter of your spelling word. On the next line write the first and second letter of the word. On the next line write the first, second and third letter of the word. Continue until you have written the entire word.
  11. Look-Cover-Say - Write a spelling word. Cover the word. Say the word. Write the word again.
  12. Spelling Chain - Use grid paper. Write a spelling word in the grid. Use letters from each of the spelling words to "chain together" all the words.
  13. Spelling Scramble - Write your spelling words. Cut out each word and then each letter. Mix up the cut-up letters and put your spelling words back together.
  14. Mixed-Up Spelling (2 players) - Fold your paper in half. On one side write your spelling words correctly. On the other side write your spelling words by mixing up the letters. Have your partner spell the mixed-up words correctly. Check your partner's work. (i.e., fourth = hrofut)
